Genuine Lisbon

Lisbon is a city that enchants those who visit it. Rich in heritage, culturally diverse, thriving in business and the birthplace of a musical genre that is the heritage of humanity – Fado. The city combines the intimacy of traditional boroughs, well branded by Fado and popular festivals, with the interculturalism to which centuries of openness to the world have accustomed the city. The hospitality of Alfacinhas, a nickname given to those born in the Portuguese capital, makes visiting Lisbon an even more special experience.

Visiting Lisbon is to travel through time. To go back to the Arab occupation, while walking through the alleys of Alfama or Mouraria; to relive the conquest of the city by the first king of Portugal near the castle of São Jorge; to feel the Portuguese Discoveries while discovering Belém; to understand the genius of the Marquis of Pombal in the “pombalina”downtown; to surprise ourselves with modern architectural and urban solutions in Parque das Nações. At evening, through the streets of Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré, you can join Lisbon’s fun and bohemian nightlife with a glass in your hand. And as if all this weren’t enough, Sintra is so close by, with its palaces and the exuberant beauty of its hills.

Day 1: Belém – Baixa – Bairro Alto - Chiado

After breakfast we drive to Belém, where some of the most important monuments in the city are located. From here departed the caravels to aboard which the Portuguese sought to give new worlds to the world. In this area we can see two monuments classified by UNESCO as World Heritage: the Jerónimos Monastery, built by King Manuel I in 1501 and the best example of the so-called Manueline style.

Very close to the Jerónimos monastery is the Belém tower, a military construction to watch over the Tejo river, the great ex-libris of the city of Lisbon and an architectural gem. In addition, Belém also houses the Monument to the Discoveries, the palace of Belém, the official residence of the President of the Republic, the National Coach Museum, the Belém Cultural Center and the museum of art, architecture and technology (MAAT).

The morning can't end without tasting a “pastel de Belém” a sweet pastry  that is a highlight of Portuguese cuisine.

After lunch visit to downtown borough “Baixa”, nearly destroyed by 1755. Let´s have a walk between the Terreiro do Paço and Restauradores. Starting near  King José I and the imposing horse Gentil, a statue sculpted by Machado de Castro, moving through Rua Augusta the Rossio square and the Figueira square with its sloping-roofed picturesque houses. From there we’ll get a beautiful view of São Jorge Castle. We head to the Restauradores to travel in the elevator of Glória, going up to the terrace of São Pedro de Alcântara, where you can rest, enjoy the geometric garden and a magnificent view over the downtown and Alfama district.

Let's cross the streets of the Bairro Alto, full of graffiti, clothes drying on clotheslines and commerce on every doorstep. At nightfall it becomes one of the main nightlife areas in the capital. On this tour we will also visit the elegant Chiado area, totally rebuilt after the 1988 fire, and descend on the Santa Justa elevator, one of the most beautiful in town.

For dinner, you can ask the guide for suggestions and if you wish to request a table reservation in a fado restaurant in the traditional Alfama borough or at Bairro Alto. 4* accommodation  in Lisbon.

Day 2: Parque das Nações – Castelo – Sé - Alfama

After breakfast, we will visit Parque das Nações, one of the most modern areas of Lisbon. Until 1998, it was an industrial area, a tanker docks. Expo 98 allowed to rehabilitate this whole area. Today you will find here luxury residences with promenade areas near the Tagus, several facilities dedicated to culture and leisure, such as the Altice Arena, which has a versatile hall with 12500 seats. But also the Casino of Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama tower and many restaurants and bars. The Lisbon oceanarium, which you can visit, has more than 30 aquariums, with its central tank having more than 5 million liters of water. Here cohabit sharks, rays, barracudas, moonfishes among other species.

After lunch let's have a look to Alfama, one of Lisbon's most popular boroughs, with its typical Arab and medieval architecture and narrow alleys, was one of the few places in Lisbon that survived the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. In Alfama you will find most of the fado houses, where you can enjoy numerous live shows.  It is in this part of the city that the castle of São Jorge and the Santa Luzia terrace are located. From Santa Luzia visitors can have a sweeping view over Alfama and Tagus River.

Day 3: Lisbon – Sintra - Cascais -Lisbon

Departure from Lisbon after breakfast (8.30h)

Visit to Sintra, a picturesque Portuguese village, located in the heart of the Sintra's mountains. Visita à vila que que encantou reis e inspirou poetas. Wander through the village that enchanted kings and inspired poets. Stroll its streets, discover the magnificence of Sintra's national palace, one of the few palaces built in the Middle Ages that has come almost intact to our days. Enjoy Sintra's famous traditional pastries – the queijadas and the travesseiros.

The next tourist attraction is the palace of Pena which is located on top of the hill and was designed by the artistic King Ferdinand II. The palace is an extravagant mixture of bright colours and beautiful stone sculptures. A real fantasy castle. From the palace we can see the Moorish Castle, built in the 9th century for protection, but unable to defend the Moors against the Christian crusades.

After lunch departure to Azenhas do Mar, a village encrusted on the cliffs by the sea, one of the most beautiful postcards from Portugal.

Visit to the westernmost point of continental Europe - the Cape of Roca. On the way back to the capital, a short stop will be made in the beautiful town and seaside resort of Cascais.

Would you like to include a horse ride on your trip? A jet ski tour on the river? Enjoy a relaxing massage in contact with nature? And why not a romantic dinner?
