Bright Lisbon

per personLisbon has been the capital of Portugal since 1255. It was Roman, barbaric and Moorish until it was conquered by the first king of Portugal. From Lisbon departed the brave Portuguese who discovered new worlds and enriched the kingdom. Lisbon is a bright city, proud of its history, innovative and cosmopolitan, seductive and diverse, with many villages and urban settings inside. From the modernity of Parque das Nações to the monumental parish of Belém, Lisbon extends over 7 hills that overlook the Tagus estuary.
Belém is monumental, recalling the time of the discoveries and the achievements of Portuguese people. Belém, joins the exuberance of the Manueline art, present in the Jerónimos monastery and in the Belém tower to the no less admirable lines of the museum of art, architecture and technology (MAAT) or the cultural center of Belém. In such a short space so many and so diverse proposals. Not to mention the obligatory pastels of Belém. The Pombalino historical center was built over the ruins of the ancient city of Lisbon, destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755. Its construction has followed a rigorous urban plan, according to a reticular street/quarter model, obeying the philosophy of Enlightenment. Alfama, one of Lisbon’s most popular boroughs, with its typical Arab and medieval architecture and narrow alleys. One of the boroughs where the connection between the city and the Tagus River is felt most. Bairro Alto is the ideal place to end the day. A stroll through the terraces followed by a typical dinner in a fado house. Just to start the night!

Morning: Belém
After breakfast we drive to Belém, where some of the most important monuments in the city are located. From here departed the caravels aboard which the Portuguese sought to give new worlds to the world. In this area we can see 2 monuments classified by UNESCO as World Heritage: the Jerónimos Monastery, built by King Manuel I in 1501 and the best example of the so-called Manueline style.
- Close to the Jerónimos monastery is the Belém tower, a military construction to watch over the Tejo river, the great ex-libris of the city of Lisbon and an architectural gem. In addition, Belém also houses the Monument to the Discoveries, the palace of Belém, the official residence of the President of the Republic, the National Coach Museum, the Church of Memory and the Belém Cultural Center. The morning can´t end without tasting a “pastel de Belém” a sweet pastry that is a highlight of Portuguese cuisine.
Afternoon: Baixa - Alfama - Bairro Alto
After lunch visit to downtown borough “Baixa”, nearly destroyed by 1755 earthquake but redesigned by Marquees de Pombal, and dubbed as “pombalina”. Let´s have a walk between the Terreiro do Paço and Restauradores. Strating near King José I and the imposing horse Gentil, a statue sculpted by Machado de Castro, moving through Rua Augusta, and stopping at the Santa Justa elevator, one of Lisbon’s most iconic lifts the Rossio square and the Figueira square with its sloping-roofed picturesque houses. From there we’ll get a beautiful view of São Jorge Castle.
Alfama, one of Lisbon's most popular boroughs, with its typical Arab and medieval architecture and narrow alleys, was one of the few places in Lisbon that survived the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. In Alfama you will find most of the fado houses, where you can enjoy numerous live shows. It is in this part of the city that the castle of São Jorge and the Santa Luzia terrace is located. From Santa Luzia visitors can have a sweeping view over Alfama and Tagus River.
The Bairro Alto is another of Lisbon's typical boroughs and one of the capital's main areas of nightlife and "reunion" between the city's young people. Streets are full of graffiti and laundry hanging outdoors. Among studies, groceries and bars it seems to be commerce in every door.
If you enjoy a night out having fun Bairro Alto it’s the place to be.
